The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team beat Georgetown Gateway 4-1 Feb. 21 to remain in second place in the District 25-4A standings.

Head coach Abigail Blunt was to the point when asked about the value of earning another win against the Lady Gators (6-9-2, 2-5).

“It’s important,” she said. “Gateway is one of the more challenging teams in our district. Getting the win was critical to the standings.”

The loss puts the Lady Gators in fourth place, and Lago Vista is third with four matches remaining.

Marble Falls (10-3-1, 7-1) took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by junior Haley France. Miley Bolanos scored the third goal 53 seconds into the second half. France added the last goal with about 36 minutes left in the contest. Bolanos earned an assist.

Before each contest, Blunt outlines the goals for that particular opponent. At the conclusion, she asks her players if they accomplished them.

Out of five goals for Gateway, the Lady Mustangs accomplished four.

The coach said setting the goals is another tool she uses to teach her players strategy and the playbook.

“We shifted and pressed better versus just watching our teammates run,” she said. “We showed better movements from the wings.”

The Lady Gators’ goal came from a penalty kick.

“We got lazy on defense and didn’t move our feet,” Blunt said.

Marble Falls takes a bye Friday, Feb. 24, and travels to Austin Achieve for a 5 p.m. kick Tuesday, Feb. 28.
